Abstract

An application of the waterproof layer to concrete slab is important technology to make good durability of concrete material in the pavement structure. The waterproof layer on concrete slab is required not only the waterproof function of the material but also the certain properties for the dynamic load caused by running vehicles. The dynamic load to the waterproof layer on the concrete deck slabs comes from the running and braking wheel on pavement surface. Recently a performance-based design method is adopted in the specifications of civil infrastructures. To be based on the concept of performance-based design method, it is important to evaluate mechanical properties of waterproof layer for the dynamic load. In this paper, it was proposed FEM model to simulate the damage of waterproof layer by the wheel with running and braking on pavement surface, and by using the proposal model with take into account the effects on pavement specifications the mechanical behaviour of waterproof layer was made clear. And also, it was proposed the evaluation system of the waterproof performance that was the adhesive properties to concrete slab and the influence on vertical displacement of pavement surface. Two different types of waterproof layer which mean the sheet-type and coating-type waterproofings were evaluated by the proposed evaluation system from the performance-based design point of view. In application of sheet-type waterproofing that is relatively thick-layer with low young's modulus, the results was that the damage of concrete slab from the running and braking dynamic load was reduced by the waterproof layer on concrete slab. On the other hand, in application of the coating-type waterproofing that is relatively thin-layer with high Young's modulus, the small vertical displacement of pavement surface was caused.
