Abstract

The oil industry is conducting man's first major venture into recovery of non-biological resources from the sea. Today some 16 per cent of the world's oil supply and 6 per cent of the natural gas supply come from reservoirs located below the ocean floor; by 1980, 25 per cent of our oil supplly may come from such reservoirs. Recovery of the oil and other nonbiological resources presents a significant challenge for the future. Solving the materials problems is part of meeting that challenge. Development of new non-metallic materials for use in mooring lines and pipe and for protection of the structures and equipment will be required for future development of resources beyond the continental shelf. Development of high-strength metals capable of resisting the ocean environment will also be a requirement for development of the resources in deep water.
