Abstract

There is good news and bad news for Italian science in the 1996 finance bill, which was presented to parliament last month. True to his word, research minister Giorgio Salvini has included extra funds for some areas of research. Most notable is the beleaguered space agency (ASI), which is awarded L950bn (about £380m) in 1996, some L220bn more than expected. Also, its budget will increase to L1150bn in 1997 and L1300bn in 1998.
