Louise L. Tyler Educational Resource Associates University of California Los Angeles, California A teacher is usually portrayed as interacting with a group of students. What is overlooked or minimized in this scene is what the interaction is about. Jackson,1 in The Way Teaching Is, expanded the notion of teaching from group acivity (interactive) to such activities as preparing lesson plans, grading papers, studying for the lesson (pre-active). Probably because his list of examples of pre-active items was not exhaustive he did not specifically mention selecting materials, although in my judgment it is a crucial aspect of teaching.
