Abstract

This is the second edition of a book which since its first publication in 2002 has made an important contribution to teacher development by helping teachers to evaluate coursebooks; to source, evaluate, and adapt materials; and, to design materials for themselves. In addition to updating the materials and references of the original, this edition includes new content on worksheet design, on learner differentiation, on digital resources, on recent developments such as coursebook packages and ancillary materials, and on learner involvement in the generation of materials. The book has been written so it can be used as a ‘set text’ on courses, as a resource for student assignments and research or as a source of ‘guidance and inspiration’ (p. 6) for individual or groups of practising teachers. Each chapter therefore contains critical summaries of the relevant literature, opinions, and suggestions in relation to salient issues and procedures, tasks for individual responses or group discussion (some of which have accompanying keys or commentaries at the back of the book), end of chapter questions for ‘Reflection, discussion, action’, a brief review of the chapter, and an even briefer preview of the subsequent chapter and suggestions for further reading.
