Abstract

This study was conducted to explore the relationship between materialistic inclination and owned values and life satisfaction, as held by 560 respondents in Turkey. Richins and Dawson's (1992) Materialism Scale was used to measure materialistic inclination and owned values were questioned by Kahle's (1983) List of Values (LOV). The participants were separated into two groups with either low or high materialistic tendencies, and the differences between the owned values and life satisfaction of both groups were investigated. The results showed that the group with higher materialistic tendency had higher mean scores in six values of LOV than the group with lower materialistic tendency. Higher materialist group also reported different degrees of satisfaction with various domains of life.
