Abstract
The attempt to develop a materialist understanding of the individual demanded that we should first subject the dominant psychological accounts to fundamental criticism. All Marxists agree that these accounts are unsatisfactory, at the very least in their failure to contextualise the person within ‘the ensemble of social relations’. But we have seen that Marxists differ on whether and to what extent, notwithstanding their limitations, certain psychological theories can be utilised within a materialist analysis.
