Abstract

Material well-being of a place can be defined as a measure of local residents command over goods and services. In constructing its Human Development Index (HDI), the United Nations uses gross domestic product (GDP) a monetary value of all goods and services produced in a given year as an indicator of material wellbeing. But while GDP is an accepted measure in countries throughout the world, its usefulness in the Arctic is questionable.
