Abstract
My invited co-editorship of a special themed issue of this prestigious journal represented the first time in its history that it had addressed the field of dress, fashion and textiles history in a sustained way. Working with a social historian, my contribution was to identify the issues raised for my field of study by current thinking on gender in historical studies and to offer an exposition of the contribution made by our volume. It provides a readership of historians with a range of approaches and case studies. Drawing on an international community of interest, it demonstrates how integration of close object and textual analysis can enrich our understanding of wider historical factors and illuminate otherwise obscure facets of gendered historical experience. This volume raised the profile of my field internationally and made the case for its role in extending the reach of social and cultural history.
