Abstract

Resources for the preservation and conservation of library collections are seldom adequate to meet the overwhelming needs that exist. One of the critical issues in library administration is selecting deserving items from vast library collections for conservation attention. This article discusses the various conservation selection strategies used by repositories and proposed in the literature. And, for the purpose of stimulating productive dialogue, the author offers an approach to the selection problem utilizing traditional conservation selection techniques and methods of item isolation advocated by other information disciplines. The aim of an integrated approach to conservation selection is the development of an efficient and effective mode of document selection.
