Abstract

A case study is presented about the proper material selection for a 2000 HP pump's shaft as an engineering consultation for the Dead Sea Works, Sdom, Israel. The approach adopted by the materials engineer is explained. The details of the mechanical analysis and the material analysis are given, that led to a first selection of steels. Service considerations where then examined. After the final decision was made about the material selection, manufacturing specifications have been elaborated. The scope of this work serves as a case study in an undergraduate course in Materials Engineering.
