Abstract

Silicon nitride has the best combination of physical and mechanical properties for use as rolling elements in hybrid ceramic bearings. The term ‘silicon nitride’ describes a family of materials, including alpha- and beta-sialons, with different compositions and made by different processing routes. Not all types of silicon nitride are suitable for use in rolling bearing applications where stresses may be as high as 4 GPa. Specification and selection of types or grades of material together with the associated quality control parameters are important aspects in the development of hybrid ceramic bearings.
