Abstract

Material hardships, or difficulty meeting basic needs, are a known predictor of adverse child health outcomes. With greater attention to the social determinants of health and the unique experiences of children with chronic health conditions or special health care needs (CSHCN), research is increasingly focused on understanding the specific role of poverty-related risks such as material hardship on the health of CSHCN. In Material Hardships and Health Care Utilization among Low-Income Children with Special Health Care Needs, we presented a study surveying parents of CSHCN examining the associations between material hardships, including food and housing insecurity, difficulty paying bills, and unmet health care needs, and health care utilization, including emergency department (ED) visits, hospital admissions and unmet health care needs.
