Matching into residency as an old graduat

Abstract

Matching into residency is challenging, but itis more difficult for many internationalmedical graduates when they have an oldyear of graduation. A few years before,most programs had the cutoff for the yearof graduation at five years or less. Butrecently, we have noticed that manyprograms have reduced it to 3 years or less.This has made it challenging for images asthey don’t always have plans to get into aresidency in the UNITED STATES from thestart; a lot of times, after a few years ofpractice, they feel like doing a residency inthe UNITED STATES, and they find themselves in a situation where their year of graduation has become a red flag forthem.
