Abstract

Mast cells and basophils are immune cells associated to allergic diseases in particular by their common expression of the Fc receptor of high affinity for IgE, FcεRI. These two cell types also exhibit similar developmental and functional characteristics. In addition to homeostatic functions, mast cells and basophils perform essential roles in metabolic, anti-infectious and allergic responses. They exhibit different characteristics that constitute a useful tool for their clinical investigation. This review summarizes the diversities and commonalities of these two cell types with a focused approach to their contribution in allergic immune response.
