Abstract

The third programme in marine science and technology (MAST-III) of the European Union was adopted for the period 1994-98 with a budget of some 230 million ECU (330 million USD), of which 30% for marine technologies and some 10% for coastal engineering. A first round of projects has been funded and started early in 1996. The programme has been divided into the following sections: A. Marine Science (Marine systems research, extreme marine environments, regional seas research). B. Strategic Marine Research (Coastal and shelf seas research, coastal engineering and natural defenses). C. Marine Technology (Generic technologies, advanced systems). D. Supporting initiatives. The basic outline of the programme is presented. The author describes its technical contents and types of projects and possible mechanisms for international collaboration and concertation. Then selected projects (benthic lander, AUVs, etc.) are outlined.
