Abstract

Symptomatic talocalcaneal coalitions, characterized by persistent symptoms, may require surgical intervention. Surgical resection, acknowledged as a technically demanding procedure, is thoroughly addressed in this paper. Offering a comprehensive guide, the paper emphasizes precise assessment, detailed evaluation, and meticulous surgical technique, providing a step-by-step approach for surgeons. The significance of advanced imaging, surgical indications, patient positioning, coalition excision tips, and postoperative care is highlighted, aiming to enhance overall surgical outcomes. Key Concepts(1)It is important to confirm the precise location of foot and ankle pain and that no other coalitions exist.(2)Surgical management depends on the thickness of the posterior facet and foot alignment, particularly hindfoot valgus.(3)A 3D CT-scan is needed for comprehensive preoperative planning.(4)Successful coalition excision is noted by an increase in hindfoot range of motion while visualizing movement in the posterior facet.
