Abstract

DR. STEPHEN SENER (Pasadena, California): So to fully appreciate the surgical decision making for the treatment of ipsilateral breast tumor recurrence after breast conservation and whole breast radiation, it's important to put these decisions into the context of the biology associated with this type of recurrence. Ipsilateral breast recurrence occurs approximately 10–20% of the time over a ten-year period, and the patients represent a heterogeneous population. Such an event can represent a local recurrence in the same quadrant as the original primary tumor or a new primary cancer in a different quadrant.
