Abstract

Mast cells were observed in pleques of multiple sclerosis (MS). The specimens were obtained from the chiasma region and adjacent parts of the optic nerves and tracts. Since such cells were absent from controls and from non-demyelinated areas of MS patients they are most probably newly-formed cells in the plaques. Further attention should be directed to this cell type in various pathological conditions of the nervous system since they have the capacity to synthesize, store and release many biologically active substances such as biogenic amines and sulphated mucopolysaccharides.
