Abstract
Mast cells are multi-tasking cells. These enigmatic, multifacetted protagonists of natural immunity are functionally relevant to many more aspects of tissue physiology than just to the generation of inflammatory and vasodilatory responses. In the recent times their actions in various diseases have been investigated and have divulged many new facts owing to the plethora of cytokines secreted at different times under different conditions. All the aspects related to mast cells when put together explore the possibility of treatment modality options involving mast cells. This is an overview emphasizing on the role of mast cells in both physiological as well as pathological conditions.
