Abstract

The occurrence of pleural effusion in patients with sarcoidosis always incurs the suspicion of secondary infection with tuberculosis. A review of the American literature between 1953 and 1961 has failed to uncover a documented case report of pleural effusion resulting primarily from sarcoidosis. The following case report is of interest in that it illustrates the rare occurrence of massive pleural effusion occurring in a patient with pleural sarcoidosis in the absence of demonstrable tuberculosis.
