Abstract

In vivo and in vitro experiments show that sickle trait blood can be safely used for blood transfusions. However, nowhere in the literature is there a reference as to the possible dangers of the use of such blood in exchange transfusions. We are reporting a case of a premature white infant with physiological jaundice who received an exchange transfusion of blood containing hemoglobin A and S and expired five days later. Autopsy revealed generalized intravascular aggregation of sickled erythrocytes similar to that found in patients dying in sickling crises.
