Abstract

Bleeding from stomal varices is a rare but well-known complication of ileostomy, colostomy and ileal conduits in patients with portal hypertension.' Treatment of these often severe hemorrhages is controversial. Conservative local measures are associated with high recurrence rates and extensive surgical shunting procedures are frequently not indicated in the high risk cirrhotic patient. Transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt is a recently described technique for treating complications of portal hypertension. We report our experience using this procedure in a patient with massive peristomal bleeding. CASE REPORT
