Abstract

Masseteric hypertrophy accompanied frequently by clenching can cause tooth abrasion, tooth cracking, toothache, masticatory muscle pain, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain, and tension type headache. Botulinum toxin type A can be used for treating masseteric hypertrophy. Botulinum toxin procedure, although safe and simple, has a relatively short duration of effect and frequently requires re-treatment. To attain a less invasive and more permanent solution, a new masseteric reduction procedure was developed for treating masseter muscle hypertrophy.
