Abstract

AbstractThe mass spectral fragmentation behavior of various α‐substituted tetrahydrofuran derivatives and their deuterium labeled analogs has been examined. It was established that the ester and hydroxy derivatives undergo ring fragmentation associated with long range hydrogen transfer. The mass spectra of the deuterium labeled samples provided evidence that direct hydrogen transfer takes place from positions as far as thirteen or more carbon atoms away from the oxygen function in preference to the McLafferty rearrangement. Examination of the spectra of the deuterium labeled derivatives shed further light on the mechanism of the loss of water from the molecular ion and various fragment ions.
