Abstract

A general mass-splitting operator is considered for\(\tilde U_{12} \). It is shown to lead to linear mass formulas for the baryons, and, under reasonable assumptions, also for the mesons. It is observed that experimental masses satisfy quadratic mass relations for both mesons and baryons as suggested by a quark model. It is therefore concluded that\(\tilde U_{12} \) is not in agreement with experiment in this respect.
