Abstract

An index case of cavitary pulmonary tuberculosis prompted a study of mass screening techniques for the detection of tuberculosis in an isolated US Army outpost. Mass screening of 2,458 individuals detected five cases of active pulmonary tuberculosis and 34 cases of recent tuberculosis infection (as evidenced by recent PPD skin test conversion). Twenty per cent of the study population did not report for screening and skin testing; hence, the number of patients contacted by mass screening was less than anticipated.
