Abstract

A discussion of mass renormalization in the light-front Tamm-Dancoff approximation in QED is presented. The covariant mass counterterm, that is, one independent of external momenta and free from the infrared cutoff parameter, is obtained for an electron by the use of the transverse dimensional regularization method. The result coincides with the perturbative result. The mass counterterm so obtained enables one to obtain a relativistic equation for bound states. The mass counterterms for a hydrogen atom are also considered. We take the nonrelativisitic limit and the $S$-wave energy levels are obtained.
