Abstract

This entry explores the major theories in the field of mass communication. It indicates the main authors, from the analysis of mass phenomena and the public in the nineteenth century, passing through the rise of journalism studies in the 1920s, to the emergence of the Internet and new digital media. Theories such as the Chicago School, the American functionalist research, the Frankfurt School, cultural studies, political economy of media, and the Toronto School are highlighted.
