Abstract

Emission in the /sup 13/CO J = 1-0 line of CO was detected from 15 circumstellar envelopes (three tentatively) produced by mass loss from evolved stars. The intensity ratios for the /sup 13/CO:/sup 12/CO lines are on the average higher for stars with (O)>(C) than for carbon stars. While individual values are not well determined, the observations suggest that Mira stars have /sup 12/C//sup 13/C in the range 5--20, while for carbon stars the range is 30--100.
