Abstract

Very different amounts of convective mixing are predicted for DA and for non-DA white dwarfs if we accept the recently determined mass differences between these two classes of stars. Using convection zone models calculated by Fontaine (1973) we show that this effect contributes strongly to the atmospheric abundance differences provided DA and non-DA stars have originally comparable total hydrogen abundances.
