Abstract

A shell-model calculation was carried out for the singly excited states of mass-18 nuclei using the group SU 3 to classify the states. The effect of the spin-orbit coupling in mixing these states is examined, and the structure of the dipole resonances is elucidated. The division of the dipole strength from the various excited configurations to the ground state is calculated. The lowest of these dipole states is found to occur in the region of 12 MeV.
