Abstract
A record of devotion to disease prevention, health promotion, and health services research characterizes the career of James O. Mason, MD, DrPH, who was named last month to succeed William H. Foege, MD, MPH, as director of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), Atlanta. Mason has been executive director of the Utah Department of Health since 1979. The move to Atlanta in December will be a return to professional roots for Mason, who is 53. A medical officer of the US Public Health Service for 11 years, he served as chief of the CDC's Epidemic Intelligence Service (1959), Hepatitis Surveillance Unit (1960), and Surveillance Section (1961), as well as deputy director of the Bureau of Laboratories (1964-1968) and of the entire CDC (1969-1970).
