Abstract

This six-page 2006 article is titled “Maryland Workers’ Compensation for Law Enforcement Officers.” It was published in The Trooper magazine. The article analyzes how workers’ compensation laws are more favorable for police and other law enforcement officers, when compared to workers’ compensation laws that apply to non-police officers. Topics include (1) a history of workers’ compensation, (2) the “going and coming” rule, (3) compensation benefits, (4) temporary total disability benefits, (5) permanent partial disability benefits, (6) second tier award for police and other law enforcement officers, (7) occupational disease, (8) presumption in favor of police and other law enforcement officers, (9) special disability retirement based on injury in the line of duty, and (10) avoiding pitfalls.
