Abstract

This compendium of 37 presentations, 3 panel discussions, plus occasional questions and answers (all boiled down to 194 pages) is the result of an institute held in June, 1959, under the chairmanship of Dr. Paul Harper. The first half of the report scrutinizes current knowledge and problems in the field, while the second half describes the practical application of such knowledge to the handicapped child. The contents range from up-to-date opinion on cultural and social influences on development, the effect of radiation, and an interim report of the C. P. collaborative study, to a consideration of communication skills, as well as a perspective of mental retardation, its causes, recognition, and management. Several of Maryland's child health activities, e.g. in prematurity, convulsive disorders, hearing and speech problems are outlined with enough specific information to prompt interested readers to pursue the matter further.
