Abstract

Mary Muhlenberg (1727-1802) received a two-volume devotional book from the Royal Court Chaplain in London, Friedrich Michael Ziegenhagen (1694-1776). The devotional was entitled Tagliche Seelenspeise zur Nahrung des Glaubens ( Daily Soul-Food for the Nourishment of the Faith ). Mary's marginal notes on the pages of these books attest Mary's devotional piety, which was derived from Luther's theological dictum: Prayer, meditation, and struggle make a theologian. Anna Maria Weiser Muhlenberg was clearly shaped by this Lutheran understanding of the interplay between prayer, reflection, and the struggles of daily life. She lived her Lutheranism in its classic expression and crafted a testimony that she, our foremother in the faith, shared with her family, God, and now us. Her unexpected gift is heartwarming and extraordinary.
