Abstract
The object of the present essay is to exam? ine two quite different, if equally prominent, books published in recent years in England which address themselves to the problem of a marxist anthropology: Pre-CapitalistModes of Production (PCMP) by Barry Hindess and Paul Hirst, two sociologists linked with the journal Economy and Society; and Marxist Analyses and Social Anthropology (MASA) edited by Maurice Bloch of the London School of Economics, a collection of papers read at Oxford in 1973 at the Decennial Con? ference of the Association of Social Anthro? pologists of the Commonwealth. I shall not attempt to summarize but will focus on cer? tain common themes and problems in the books, including the construction and use of social theory, mode of production in primitive society, and history and transition.
