Marxist aesthetics in Festus Iyayi’s "violence"

Abstract

The Nigerian Festus Iyayi’s novel Violence portrays a modern African society in a money economy wherein the possession of the capital is paramount in defining the individual as a member of the community. The characters in Violence come into two distinct categories. On the one hand, there are those who own the capital. On the other hand, there are those who do not possess the capital. As a keen observer of the environmental and social changes taking place in Africa since colonisation, Festus Iyayi’s novel reflects the modern African society in its diverse forms: the urban society, morality, the problematic of development of newly independent African nations, and the attraction of towns and cities on country folks. What does urban life teach us about new social organisations and the relationships between the rich and the poor? This article aims at assessing the above-raised issue in the light of Marxist mode of text analysis in order to enlighten not only the aesthetic value of the novel, but also the sociological relevance of Festus Iyayi’s imaginative writing. La violence de roman de Festus l'Iyayi nigerien depeint une societe africaine moderne dans une economie d'argent ou la possession du capital est primordiale en definissant l'individu en tant que membre de la communaute. Les caracteres dans la violence heritent deux categories distinctes. D'une part, il y a ceux qui possedent le capital. D'une part, il y a ceux qui ne possedent pas le capital. En tant qu'observateur vif des changements sociaux environnementaux et intervenant en Afrique depuis la colonisation, le roman de Festus Iyayi reflete la societe africaine moderne sous ses formes diverses : la societe urbaine, moralite, le problematique du developpement des nations africaines nouvellement independantes, et l'attraction des villes et des villes sur des gens de pays. Que la vie urbaine nous enseigne-t-elle au sujet de nouveaux organismes sociaux et des rapports entre les riches et les pauvres ? Cet article vise a evaluer la question au-dessus-soulevee a la lumiere du mode marxiste de l'analyse des textes afin d'eclairer non seulement la valeur esthetique du roman, mais egalement la pertinence sociologique de l'ecriture imaginative de Festus Iyayi.
