Abstract

Domestic advice, entertainment, and home products icon Martha Stewart has been convicted of lying to government investigators following the sale of nearly 4000 shares of ImClone Systems Inc. Following accusations of insider trading, stock price manipulation, and perjury during a government investigation, the share price in her company tumbled, her award-winning television show was cancelled, advertising revenues in her magazine have plunged, and corporate officers have resigned. Can Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia Inc. survive the downfall of its namesake? Is it safe or rational to build a publicly traded brand around the name of a living person?
