Abstract

We have investigated structure, magnetic and electrical properties, and thermal shape memory effect in Ni–Mn–Ga films. The Ni 49Mn 29.6Ga 21.4 and Ni 56.4Mn 21.8Ga 21.8 films have been chosen for further characterization since they had revealed the presence of martensitic transformations (MT) with the martensitic start ( M s) and finish ( M f) temperatures below ( M s=310 K, M f=260 K) and above ( M s=420 K, M f=330 K) the Curie temperature 365 and 350 K, respectively. The Ni 49Mn 29.6Ga 21.4 and Ni 56.4Mn 21.8Ga 21.8 films at room temperature have cubic and mixed tetragonal–cubic structures, respectively. An anomalous behavior of the ferromagnetic resonance due to an increase in the magnetic anisotropy in the martensitic phase has been observed. MT in both films has been manifested as a considerable jump (of ∼10%) in electrical resistance and decrease in effective magnetization. For Ni 56.4Mn 21.8Ga 21.8 films, the shape memory effect has been evaluated from observations of shape recovery of the curled films portions separated from the mica substrates.
