Abstract

Alloys of formula near AuMn have an ordered CsCl structure. On cooling through the Néel temperature the originally cubic phase ( C) distorts to a tetragonal phase ( t 1) with c/ a < 1 at the onset of anti-ferromagnetic order. Some alloys distort on further cooling to a phase with c/ a > 1( t 2). In the course of attempts to grow single untwinned crystals of the t 1 and t 2 phases for magnetic investigation a detailed study of the crystallography of the martensitic transformations C− t 1 and t 1− t 2 has been made using multiple beam interference and X-ray techniques.
