Abstract
The chapter presents the basics of the demographic analysis of marriage and nuptiality in sub-Saharan Africa: concepts, methods, models, and main findings. It documents country variations in age at marriage, proportion ever-married, and polygamy, as well as age patterns, trends, and socio-economic differentials. It discusses some specific features of marriage in Africa, in particular polygamy. The first section details the concepts of marriage. The second section documents the data collection methods. The third section displays age patterns, period and cohort effects. The fourth section presents the multi-state nuptiality tables. The fifth section underlines the specific features of African marriages. The next sessions focus on specific issues: socio-economic differentials (6), recent trends (7), premarital fertility and ethnicity (8), features of marriage in Southern Africa (9), and marriage markets (10). The chapter contains an extensive bibliography and an abundant illustration.
