Abstract

AbstractThis chapter explores Augustine's views of marriage in light of his understanding of salvation history. Augustine suggests that humanity is created to be in friendship with God and with each other. The great tragedy of the fall is that both relationships were nearly destroyed. Many accounts of marriage focus almost solely on creation and fall, but Augustine also mentions marriage in relation to redemption. Through God's grace, the possibility for restored relationships occurs, before and after the incarnation and resurrection of Christ. Within the context of the entirety of salvation history, this chapter also takes up some of the concerns about gender and gendered roles that were raised in chapter 1.
