Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the fertility, current status of soil nutrient content, mapping and also creating an actual soil nutrient database of agricultural lands in Marmara Region using Geographical Information Systems (GIS). This study includes Marmara region provinces. Soil samples were taken 0–20 cm deep and spatial locations of sampling points were registered as coordinates. In these soil samples, soil fertility (soil texture, pH, total soil salinity, calcium carbonate, organic matter), available micro and macro elements (N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, Cu, Zn and Mn) were analyzed. Analysis results of these samples were classified and evaluated for deficiency, sufficiency or excess in respect of plant nutrients. The following, soil fertility maps and a database for current status of the study area were created using GIS techniques. Result of the analysis, the soils of the Marmara region in general, clay loam, slightly alkaline, at least in terms of organic matter, saltless, and were found to be less calcareous soils. Also very poor and poor in nitrogen, available potassium, calcium and magnesium, the class was over in terms. Phosphorus deficiency observed in 47% of the territory of the region, is seen in 53% of excess phosphorus. While iron and copper contents sufficiently, the zinc and manganese content was less.
