Abstract

An early diagnosis and treatment for HIV is essential in reducing the transmission of the virus, improving health outcomes and reducing the stigma that is associated with the disease. This article provides the healthcare assistant and assistant practitioner (HCA and AP) with information to help them continue to make a positive contribution to the care of people with human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS). HIV weakens a person's immune system and their ability to fight everyday infections and disease. It is transmitted from person to person and, if left untreated, can progress through a series of stages and lead to AIDS.
