Abstract

A review of methods used to study the rate of food passage in poultry shows that no consistant technique for marking food has been adopted. Apparently no indicator possessing all the necessary requirements of a reliable marker has been found and described.An effective marker must have the following qualities. It must be convenient and easy to use, readily detectable in the feces, and its application must not interfer with the normal behavior or physiology of the bird. The last consideration is the most important in obtaining meaningful data. For example, birds must be allowed to eat normally and must not be excited during an experiment. That excitement can alter the rate of food passage has been shown by Henry et al. (1933) and Tucky et al. (1958).
