Abstract

The study focused on the marketing of plantain in Owerri Agricultural Zone of Imo State, Nigeria. The main objective of the study is to determine the rural- urban price ratio (farmers share) of plantain marketing in the study area. Data were collected from 60 traders from four markets in Owerri area namely: Eke Ukwu Owerri, Owerri relief market, Orie Amokohia and Nkwo Ukwu Ihiagwa. The study revealed that women play a major role in the marketing of plantain than men with the major motive of supplementing their family income. The farmers' share of 0.40 was obtained and this suggests that the farmers are not getting a fair share of the urban consumer price for plantain marketing in the study area. Keywords: market, farmers share, plantain, income, consumersJournal of Technology and Education in Nigeria Vol. 9(2) 2004: 35-39
