Abstract

In a follow-up study to a paper published earlier in this journal (Bater et al., 1994) a prominent Canadian geographer and two Russian colleagues examine the impact of the new political economy on central Moscow's employment structure, housing stock, and land use. The paper focuses on the scale of investment in capital construction, dimensions of change in population and socioeconomic structure, and opinions of residents in Moscow's Central Prefecture regarding the impact of these changes. The assessment of socioeconomic structure and residents' opinions is based on the results of a questionnaire survey of a sample of residents of the Central Prefecture conducted in October 1997. A similar survey of residents of the Central Prefecture conducted in October 1993 will serve as a benchmark.
