Abstract

HE MAJOR HISTOCOMPATIBILITY complex (MHC) of the rat (RTI system) contains two distinct class I regions: the RT1.A region, which codes for the class Ia molecules, and the RTl.CIE region, which codes for different groups of class Ib molecules. A similar organization with two separated class I regions is present in the mouse, whereas all other species examined so far have only one class I region, which is separated from the class II genes by the class III region. Within the last few years, genes unrelated to class I (non-class I genes) were identified which are located in the MHC class Ib region. These genes can be used as genetic markers for analyzing conservation of synteny between MHC regions in different species.
