Abstract
Rooted cuttings of Populus nigra L. cv. Loenen and Populus maximowiczii Henri x Populus nigra L. cv. Rochester were exposed to realistic mixtures of 03, S02 and NO. for 6 weeks. Compared with controls, older leaves of both cultivars exhibited a several-fold increase in raffinose, with cv. Loenen especially responding to mixtures with ozone. In contrast, younger leaves were not altered. With respect to the seasonal shift of the raffinose pool in poplar leaves, the alterations observed may be related to an acceleration of senescence.
